Agriculture & Energy

Farm · Medical Cannabis · Solar Power

The Mont Aux Sources Estate is a self-sustaining agricultural and energy ecosystem. A working smallholding farm supplies the fine dining restaurant and engages the local community. A 12-ton annual yield aeroponic medical cannabis facility operates discreetly near the river. A large-scale solar farm powers the entire estate — making Mont Aux Sources one of South Africa's most sustainable multi-use destinations.

Agri-Tourism

The Smallholding Farm

A working community smallholding farm supplying fresh vegetables, herbs, fruit, and eggs directly to the estate's fine dining restaurant and retirement village kitchens. The farm engages the local Drakensberg village community through employment and agri-tourism experiences — including guided farm tours, seasonal harvesting activities, and a farm stall selling fresh produce.

The Aeroponic Production Facility

Positioned near the river and concealed beneath a dense canopy of tall indigenous trees — Natal figs, Cape ash, white stinkwood, and weeping willows — the 12-ton annual yield aeroponic medical cannabis facility is entirely invisible from ground level or from the hotel. The facility operates under a South African medical cannabis licence and produces pharmaceutical-grade product in a state-of-the-art clinical environment.

Clean Energy

The Solar Farm

A large-scale ground-mounted photovoltaic solar farm on the estate's hillside generates clean energy for the entire property — the hotel, retirement village, schools, spa, and production facilities. Indigenous grasses grow between the panel rows, integrating the solar farm into the natural landscape. Battery storage ensures uninterrupted power supply, making the estate fully off-grid capable.
